Package Holidays

Comparing and special offers

Package holidays are making a come back in 2009/10. For instance Thomas Cook's all-inclusive bookings rose by nearly 50% on the prior year. While the number of people taking independently booked holidays fell for the first time in a decade. No doubt the economic down turn is playing a part in this revival. This article looks at how to find great package holiday deals.

Particular reasons for the change in package holiday's fortunes are likely to include:

  • Package holidays come with ATOL protection that independently booked holidays do not.
  • All inclusive package holidays fix your outlay, which in hard pressed economic times can be appealing in contrast. While alternatives such as budget airlines have developed a reputation for adding hidden extra charges.
  • The rise of independently booked travel has encouraged package holiday companies to become even more competitive.

Package holidays typically include the cost of flights, accommodation and transfers at the destination. They tend to offer best value for popular destination where the tour operators are able save money by negotiating bulk purchase discounts with suppliers.

In the past tour operators often reduced the price of their remaining package holidays as the departure dates neared. This is because the tour operator will be committed to pay for the aircraft, accommodation etc so it's better for them to sell at a lower price than to be left with half empty accommodation / aircraft.

Trips to the more popular destinations and hotels will sell out closer to the departure dates, leaving just the less popular destinations available. During the credit crunch where demand for packages has already increased this means there are likely to be less cheap deals.
