Caravans And Mobile Homes

Modern caravans or Mobile homes as the holiday operators prefer to call them are a great way to get your own detached place for a relatively cheap price. Maybe you fancy driving down country lanes with a caravan attached to your car or alternatively hiring a static caravan by the beach for a week. There are plenty of options. This article looks at the variety of options available with caravan holidays and suggests where to start investigating these.

If you have a phobia of sleeping in a metal box, then many of the caravan package operators also offer cheap holiday lodges and cabins. While more like renting a house, you do get access to campsite facilities like swimming pools, play areas, kids clubs etc

Who to book from:

The options open to you when booking a caravan holiday include:

  • Take your own caravan
  • Hire one from an independent owner,
  • Hire one from a package company

Note: I haven't found a comparison site for caravanning yet.

Take your own caravan

Let's face it, buying a caravan isn't the sort of thing you should do on a whim. So if you don't have one already check out hiring or borrowing one first to make sure it's the choice for you.

Once you do have one joining the non-profit making Camping and caravanning society or the The Caravan Club is recommended as it gives you access to lots of good deals that they have negotiated with sites.

There's quite a few independent web sites out there listing campsites, with reviews, contact details etc. A number of the bigger sites include:

UKCampsites Contains thousands of campsite details and over 55,000 independent reviews, links to web pages and more.
KwickBreaks 2,650 UK campsites and holiday parks with search facilities.
BigFreeGuide Caravan and camping directory that lists parks at no cost to the owners.
EuroCampings Very handy listings of European campsites, but doesn't go into much detail about each site.
CampingFrance Simple directory style. Have pictures, but limited information.
AlanRogers Since 1968 the Alan Rogers Guides have been the one of the market leading campsite guides to inspected and selected campsites across Europe. This site lists campsites and information and allows bookings etc.
Independent sellers letting their own property

Some privately owned caravans and lodges may be let independently by their owners. These can be advertised in a variety of places including:

Directholidayhomes UK / France Easy to use sight. Allows you to search by area / period.
Static-Caravan UK Easy to use sight. Allows you to search by area / period. Also has a last minute deals section.
UKCaravansforhire UK Shows availability, details, etc but not price which requires an enquiry.
Icaravans UK Simple site that lists caravans, then you contact the owner.
EBay Europe Listings on eBay can be a bit random, so you are after a specific place / time you may struggle to find it. On the other hand if more flexible you may get a bargain.
Campsite accommodation Packages

Many of the campsite operators' coverage spans tents, mobile homes and chalets (includes lodges/cottages). So I've put details of all the main operators together on one article entitled Campsite Operators.
